Spending Time With God

By Joyce Balentine

The other day I sat on the deck and watched a bird sit quietly on the fence. For the longest time, he didn’t move, or make a sound. He just sat still, as if he were listening to something that my ears couldn’t detect, or maybe waiting on something. I couldn’t help but wonder why he was sitting so still. Then another bird came and sat beside him. They began to chirp and communicate among themselves. I began to wonder if we spend enough time just waiting to be with God.

I have heard the scripture that says we are to wait upon the Lord. Maybe we just need to stop what we're doing and wait on God. One of my favorite scriptures is Psalm 46:10a. Be still and know that I am God. It is difficult for God to compete with the things of the world that keep us so busy. Not that theses things are bad, but they just take up so much of our time. We are so involved with other things, that sometimes we forget to take time to just be with God.

Psalm 119: 62, At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto Thee because of Thy righteous judgments. Even though it's hard, there are times that we can find Him, and times that we should just be still and wait on Him. We make time to do the other things that are important to us, so we should be glad to make time to spend with God. Most things that are worth doing take some effort.

It's a wonderful thought to know that when we draw closer to God, He draws closer to us. James 4:10, Humble yourselves in the sight of God and He will lift you up. The Bible tells us that God is our hope, our rock, and that He is near everyone. It also says that God is full of grace, that He is merciful, and that He is slow to anger. Do we know any people that possess these qualities? Yet we set aside time to be with our friends and loved ones. I have heard that we take on some of the mannerisms and characteristics of the people that we spend time with. As for me, I want to spend more time with God, so that His love and mercy will become evident in my life.

Through worship, we have an encounter with God. What a glorious thought that is. When we spend time in a prayerful and worshipful spirit, we give God the glory that is due Him. Ephesians 1:17, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. God longs to spend time with us. We need to spend time with God now, for in Heaven we will spend all of eternity with Him. Spend time with our Heavenly Father, thanking and praising Him for the beauty and the glory of salvation that He gave to our world. In prayer and praise, God lets our spirits blend. It is a wonderful, glorious time spent in the presence of God.
